Many people will suffer some sort of fracture at some point in their life.

Usually fractures are identified and treated quickly. Unfortunately however, sometimes a fracture can be missed by treating clinicians. When this happens an opportunity to treat the fracture at an early stage is lost.

The majority of medical negligence cases we see relating to missed fractures relate to:

  1. A failure to take a full history from a patient and consider all of the injuries a patient may have suffered
  2. A failure to order appropriate investigations
  3. A failure to correctly interpret x-rays taken
  4. A failure in the system for reviewing and reporting x-rays taken

Depending upon the circumstances of the case the misdiagnosis by clinicians will most likely be with a GP, A&E Department or Orthopaedic Department.

When the diagnosis and a fracture is delayed or missed, depending upon the type of fracture and how long it takes for the correct diagnosis to be made, this may:

  • Leave a patient with a untreated injury causing pain and disability
  • Allow additional damage to occur
  • Result in the ability to treat the fracture effectively being lost
  • Result in delays in the provision of physiotherapy and pain management treatment
  • Increase the amount of treatment and surgery needed to treat the injury
  • Reduce the level of recovery that can be achieved through treatment
  • Cause permanent disability
  • Necessitate an amputation

If you think that you or a family member may have suffered an injury as a result of a failure to promptly diagnose and treat a fracture then you may be entitled to compensation.
