A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot in one of the deep veins in the body.

DVT usually occurs in a deep leg vein, a larger vein that runs through the muscles of the calf and the thigh. It can cause pain and swelling in the leg.

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition which can lead to a pulmonary embolism (PE). This is when a piece of blood clot breaks off into the bloodstream and blocks one of the blood vessels in the lungs.

These conditions are very serious and potentially life threatening. Because of this time is of the essence and there are strict guidelines and protocols in place for healthcare professionals for the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. Sometimes however these are not followed.

Typically we see people who have suffered injuries as a result of:

  1. Failure to undertake preventative steps such as the use of compression stockings or the administering of anti anticoagulant medicines.
  2. Failure by GPs and other practitioners to carry out the necessary investigations or refer for investigation and treatment.
  3. Failure to carry out a D Dimer test
  4. Failure to provide prompt and effective treatment once a DVT or PE is suspected.

If you think that you have suffered an injury or poor outcome as a result of failures in the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of DVTs or PEs then you may be entitled to compensation.
